Thu, Mar 25, 2010

University Hospital Galway has been forced to slash its budget for aggressive cancer treatment for end of life patients by €3 million in a bid to address the €22 million overall budget deficit it is facing this year, a local politician has claimed.

Fine Gael senator Fidelma Healy Eames says this reduction is one of many which will impact on vital services at the west’s flagship hospital. Others cuts include €1m to orthopaedics (eg, 200 hip operations, knee procedures, etc), €1m to prosthetic provision, eg, braces, etc, €1/2m to laboratory tests, €1/2m leading to extended theatre closures which will mean emergency procedures only and a 50 per cent reduction in gynaecological services.

End of the Teo show as Eamon gets a proper job

Thu, Mar 25, 2010

Dear Eamon,
First of all comhghairdeachas on your appointment. Can I say how glad I am that you’ve been moved from that Godforsaken department where every time I wrote to you for a few bob, I had to let on be a gaeilgoir, gathering up phlegm in the throat and rattling off a rake of focails just to give the impression that I was worthy of the many grants you threw me way. Even when they answered the phone, they hit me with some questions in the gaelgish when all I had was “Ta me go maith. Now, an bhfuil Eamon there?” But no, that was never enough for them, They always kept going, asking me if I thought you’d know what I’d be calling about. When we all know that the only type of calls you ever got were for the grants. I used to say “Deaglan anseo from (fill in the blank) Teo. Once they heard the word Teo, they knew I was ringing about the cash and put me straight through.

Galway West retains its minister in Cowen’s ‘uninspiring’ reshuffle

Thu, Mar 25, 2010

To describe An Taoiseach Brian Cowen’s cabinet reshuffle as cautious would be to give it a gravitas it does not deserve. It was simply the work of an uninspired and dreadfully uninspiring leader.

The nature of Cowen’s reshuffle was best symbolised by the calamitous Tánaiste Mary Coughlan, who publicly stated that Albert Einstein proposed the Theory of Evolution, being appointed Minister for Education and Science.
