Galway gets ready for the on-coming snow

County Galway is bracing itself for a return of the severe cold weather over the weekend, with forecasts estimating that snowfalls and ice will be more extreme this time around.

Concerns are being expressed as to whether the Galway city and county councils have enough supplies of grit to be able to deal with icy roads and ensure traffic can move safely through the major routes.

Groundworks Studios provides facilities for local textile, ceramic, and visual artists and it has been open for a year. To mark its first birthday, a craft fair/exhibition is being held in the museum, where products designed and created by Groundworks are available to purchase.

Carol Services at St Nicholas

The Annual Civic Carol Service in St Nicholas’ is on Sunday Dec 19 at 4.00pm and will include a traditional service of nine lessons and carols with a special blessing of the whole city. The service will be attended by the Mayor and city councillors as well as Rt Rev Richard Henderson, Bishop of Tuam and Bishop Martin Drennan, and representatives of all the main churches in the city. The public are invited to go along and join in celebrating the Nativity in prayers, readings and carols.

At 4.00pm on Christmas Eve, St Nicholas’ will host the Carols Round the Christmas Tree, a very informal and enjoyable service, specially for families. Due to the huge popularity of this service, space is limited so arrive early as doors will be closed when capacity is reached. Doors open from 3.15pm.

While the flurry of autumn polls have been consistent in showing meltdown for Fianna Fáil and the election of a FG/Labour coalition, the most recent Red C poll in the Irish Sun showed a new dynamic entering the race.

According to that poll, Sinn Féin and Independents are gaining significant support – SF gaining five points to reach a support level of 16 per cent, putting them ahead of Fianna Fáil, and Independents gaining three points to reach 12 per cent.
