New premises for The Western Writers’ Centre

THE Western Writers’ Centre has moved into new premises at The Hynes Building, Saint Clare’s Walk, Merchants Road, also home to Babaró and An Taibhdhearc.

The centre provides a drop-in information service on all aspects of creative writing and publishing; information on play and movie-scripting; and a manuscript reading service. It also organises readings and launches, and the annual Forge at Gort literature festival in March.

Engine failure led to plane crash which killed Salthill pilot

An investigation by the Air Accident Investigation Unit (AAIU) has concluded that engine failure was the cause of a plane crash near Ireland West Airport Knock in May 2008 which resulted in the tragic death of a Salthill man.

The final results of the investigation, released this week, also found that the injuries inflicted on the pilot, 51-year-old Markus Casey of Dr Mannix Road, Salthill, had been exacerbated by the failure of the single diagonal seatbelt harness to restrain him adequately during impact rotation.

If defendants do not abide by the rules of a suspended sentence then they are sending themsleves to jail, warned a district court judge who sent a taxi fare dodger and repeat public order offender to jail for five months after he failed to take the chances given to him.

With a history of not paying for taxi fares and a number of public order offences it was not long before Brian Curran (42) of Knocknagreine, Furbo, Galway, found himself in hot water again. Curran appeared before Judge Mary Fahy at Galway District Court on Monday where he pleaded guilty to being intoxicated and threatening and abusive behaviour at Salthill Garda Station on December 8, 2010.
