A young Loughrea man died in hospital yesterday after suffering serious head injuries in a road traffic accident earlier this week.
The 25-year-old, whose name had not been released at time of going to press, had been travelling as a passenger in the car which crashed on the Loughrea to Woodford road at 7.40pm on Monday, February 7.
According to a spokesperson at Galway Garda Station the young man, who is from Loughrea, had been rushed to University Hospital Galway with serious head injuries. There he remained in a critical condition in the intensive care unit at UHG but tragically passed away at around 1pm yesterday.
The driver, also a male in his 20s, received non life threatening injuries as a result of the single vehicle crash and was taken to Portiuncula Hospital in Ballinasloe for treatment.
Following the incident, the road was closed and the scene sealed off for forensic examination. The road was opened later on Tuesday. Gardai have confirmed that conditions at the time of the accident had been dark with dry weather, however, it is not yet clear exactly how the crash occurred. The circumstances surrounding the incident are currently under investigation.
