Rathun an Chaislean Nua Hurling club have joined forces with Cystic Fibrosis Galway in order to raise much needed funds for the Cystic Fibrosis UHG Hospital Fund and their own hurling club. The club will be hosting a 6km Fun Run sponsored by Londis/Subway Newcastle on Sunday September 11 in the Rahoon area that will incorporate the famous Thonabrucky hill.

Padraic Hynes passed away this week. For those of us who knew him the sense of disbelief is still stark. He was so full of life that we all took it for granted that he would outlive many of us. He was an ordinary man but in his own way and to many of us he was an extra-ordinary man. It is easy sometimes to say a few nice words about those who have passed, but in Padraic’s case the words come naturally. As long as I knew him and as long as I was privileged to call him a friend I never heard anyone utter a single bad word against him.

O’Connor’s Bakery was established in Ennis in 1961 by Pat and Mary O’Connor. Pat was a pastry chef in Shannon Airport at the time and both he and Mary trained as confectioners in a small coffee shop/bakery in Kilkee. For the first few years Pat commenced working in the bakery at 3am, left for work in Shannon at 7am and then did a few more hours in the bakery when he came home at 6pm.

The worst thing about looting (apart from the obvious illegality of it and the fact that you never get a bag) is that as soon as you leave the shop at pace, you immediately invalidate any guarantee or warranty rights for the products you have just pilfered and so you end up at home with a pair of Converse runners that you’ve nicked without checking to see if both of them are the same size. Or if the 52-inch plasma telly which you and your mates have just carried down the High Street is actually HD or just HD Ready and therefore no good for sitting back and watching your mates rioting on Sky News when you can’t make out the faces. Oh, the hazards of looting. And here were we all this week thinking that these people who looted are actually at home enjoying the fruits of their labours. You see, looting is so spontaneous. It is like impulse buying, but just sped up by about 10 times.
