One of the oldest books I possess, bought at Kenny’s Bookshop many years ago, is a 1772 edition of The Book of Common Prayer, described by one historian as “the official doctrinal standard of the Church of England and most other churches in the worldwide Anglican Communion”.
My copy of this famous book is pocket-sized and its title page reads – The Book of Common Prayer/and/ Administration of the Sacraments and other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church/According to the Use of the/ Church of Ireland/Together with the Psalms/of/David/Pointed as they are to be Sung or Said in Churches.

An Ecumenical Memorial Service for deceased patients of Galway University Hospitals will take place in the Salthill Hotel, Galway, at 2pm on Saturday September 24.
The service is being held to remember the deceased patients of GUH who passed away during the period of July 2010 to June 2011. Fr David Cribbin, Chaplain of University Hospital Galway, says: “We are holding this service in memory of deceased patients of Merlin Park University Hospital and University Hospital Galway and we welcome friends and family from Galway, Roscommon, Mayo, Clare and further afield to attend the service. The aim of the service is to give relatives and friends the opportunity to honour, love, and remember their deceased. It also affords the staff who have cared for the patients and their relatives an opportunity to acknowledge the loss and the privilege of having shared in this difficult family time.”
