The anarchist group, the Workers Solidarity Movement, has formed a Galway branch, marking the first official presence of the group in the city.
The popular understanding of anarchism is of a violent, anti-State movement, but the WSM Galway argues that anarchism is a political theory which aims to create a society without political, economic, or social hierarchies and seeks the maximisation of individual liberty and social equality.
Anarchists oppose the idea that power and domination are necessary for society, and instead advocate more co-operative, anti-hierarchical forms of social, political, and economic organisation.
