BMW has just launched its new X3 SUV. And what caught my eye first besides the styling was that the new X3 xDrive 2.0d SE is even better value than its predecessor. At €46,660 OTR, it is actually €4,170 less than the outgoing model, yet is equipped with a higher level of standard specification including Nevada leather upholstery, two- zone air conditioning, iDrive controller, and colour display.

Discovery 4 retains 4x4 of the Year title

Land Rover did very well at the 2011 What Car? Awards. It walked away with two special accolades. Firstly, the Land Rover Discovery 4 scooped the model’s seventh consecutive What Car? win when it was once more named 4x4 of the Year.

But the celebrations did not end there, as Land Rover’s newest and most anticipated model, the Range Rover Evoque, won its first major title with the Reader Award for the most exciting car of 2011.

A conceptual twist on a British institution has been unveiled in the form of the Volkswagen Taxi Concept – the latest evolution in a series of ‘World Taxis’ based on the underpinnings of the forthcoming UP! city car. It was unveiled in Central London last month.

Designed to meet the challenges faced by vehicles in modern cities, with ever tighter restrictions on space and emissions, the Volkswagen Taxi Concept is powered by an electric motor fed by lithium-ion batteries. With a capacity of 45 kW/h the batteries allow the electric motor to generate a maximum power output of 115 bhp, translating to a theoretical top speed of 74 mph.

The latest Euro NCAP crash testing has awarded the top achievement of five stars to the new Volkswagen Passat and new Sharan MPV.

Scoring an overall rating of 96 per cent, the Sharan achieved one of the highest ever results in what are Euro NCAP's most stringent tests to date.
