The food of love

Thu, Jan 26, 2017

Valentine's Day is the day of romance and passion, but that does not mean that you cannot make the day memorable if you are not in a relationship. Single guys listen to friends complain about having to buy gifts for their girlfriends on Valentine's Day, while wishing they had someone to buy for themselves. Boyfriend bonfires and copious ice-cream consumption are the yearly Valentine's Day prescriptions for single women. It might just be a silly holiday created by greeting card companies, but that does not dull the sting of Valentine’s Day for the newly, or perpetually, single.

Sunday lunch at The Radisson Blu Hotel & Spa, Galway

Tue, Jan 17, 2017

Located on the banks of Lough Atalia and overlooking Galway Bay, the Radisson Hotel certainly has an impressive location. It is just a stone's throw from Eyre Square and all the high profile shops, restaurants, and bars it has to offer, and a handy stroll to the bustling pubs and eateries of Quay Street. It enjoys close proximity to the bus and railway stations, all main city bus routes, and there are taxi ranks aplenty on the doorstep. Ireland West Airport is 88.5km from the hotel while Galway Racecourse is just a 10-minute drive (assuming that it is not during the actual races, when your guess is as good as mine). Despite being so close to all of this activity, it stands slightly aloof, tucked away in a quiet cul-de-sac on top of the hill with tranquil views of the water.

Leaf and Bean brings cafe culture to Tuam

Thu, Jan 12, 2017

The truth of the matter is that in the large town of Tuam there is not much to choose from in the way of cafes and restaurants. When asked for recommendations of where to go for the best food and atmosphere, my advice would have been to pack some sandwiches to eat in your car. Pedros was, for a long time, the safest bet for somewhere to take the kids, until Lumberjacks Woodfired Pizza came along and offered another choice. Still very few places for a town of that size.

The Kai cookbook club, which runs over four months beginning in January, lets diners experience some of head chef Jess’s favourite cookbooks. Each cookbook club evening focuses on the recipes from one book, cooked Kai style.

“The cookbook club allows diners to taste and experience dishes and flavours from some of the best known cookbooks in the world. It is like stepping inside that book for one night only. We love doing them as we can also immerse and become a little obsessed with the cookbook for that entire month,” Jess said.

Home from home at The Connemara Sands

Thu, Dec 22, 2016

Ballyconneely is a small village just south of Clifden, the capital of Connemara, at the entry point to the Errismore Peninsula – an ideal place from which to explore the most tranquil, unspoilt, and interesting landscape to be found anywhere in our little country. Kathy McCallion spent much of her childhood here before relocating to New York City where she met her husband, Dean Gibson. After moving back to Ireland to expand their family, Ballyconneely drew them back home, an ideal destination for both family life and work. It's still early days for the first-time hoteliers, who are making their mark on the area after 16 years in the States, bringing new life to the former Mannin Bay Hotel in Ballyconneely after it had been closed for six years.

The Connemara Sands is a gem along the Wild Atlantic Way coastline where the beaches are white and the water is a tranquil turquoise blue. The untouched beauty of the landscape is steeped in history, and it boasts unrivaled panoramic views. In 2015 The Connemara Sands Hotel opened its doors to bring travellers from across the country and the world to this hidden gem. Designed with style and comfort in mind, the reception and bar have a quirky New England style but the view through the window is picturesque Connemara countryside. The juxtaposition of the funky design and the rural location is a feast for the senses.
