Hotel Meyrick, long recognised as the home of the perfect afternoon tea in Galway city, has introduced a new traditional afternoon tea menu for autumn.
Sink into one of the parlour lounge's relaxing chairs and enjoy Hotel Meyrick’s afternoon tea, served daily from 1pm to 6pm. Savour hand-cut sandwiches with seasonal fillings, smoked salmon and cream cheese on broad bread, and homemade fruit scones with cream and preserves. Delight in the delicious pastry creations made by head pastry chef Peter and his team — fig and pistachio tartlet, raspberry macaroons, meringue disk filled with hazelnut chocolate ganache, lemon napoleon mille feuille, and traditional carrot cake — all accompanied with freshly brewed tea or coffee from only €19 per person or €34 for two.

Can Galway get any better? Well now it seems so. Galway Gold has been launched ahead of Galway 2020, an initiative between Galway city pubs and Diageo, owner of Guinness, to help raise funds for the European Capital of Culture programme. The publicans of Galway, in partnership with the Guinness Brewers have decided to launch Guinness Golden Ale on draught in a select number of Galway pubs. Aptly named Galway Gold, this beer celebrates Galway’s successful bid and promotes the city as the best choice for European Capital of Culture 2020.

New research from Bord Bia’s insight centre, The Thinking House, has found that a majority of people want guidance on how to eat well.
Since 2001, Bord Bia’s PERIscope study, the largest quantitative study of its kind in Ireland, has been exploring consumer attitudes including local food, the environment, and health and wellbeing. The comprehensive study is carried out across eight countries - Ireland and the UK, four continental European markets, the US, and China – and involves more than 8,000 interviews.

Five Irish producers were honoured at the 2017 Euro-Toques Food Awards on Monday July 31. Although Euro-Toques itself was stablished in 1996, the awards were set up in 2005 to recognise producers of “food of notable flavour and quality” and are the only awards which are bestowed by Irish chefs. They are held annually to celebrate food produced in Ireland, no shortlists or nominations are published. Instead, the committee selects the products or producers whom they believe most deserve to be singled out in any particular year, based on the nominations of its members, with usually only five awards being presented annually.

An online survey by Safefood has found that 51 per cent of Irish adults have reported eating undercooked burgers in restaurants.
While respondents listed a range of factors as to why they eat undercooked burgers, ranging from taste and confidence in the food preparation, 65 per cent said they would reconsider this choice if they knew there was a risk of food poisoning.
