AS PART of the Irish comedy explosion in the 1990s Dubliner Jason Byrne emerged as a high-energy in-your-face new act. Over he next decade he was to become one of the biggest touring acts in Ireland and Britain and his RTÉ series Anonymous - which featured Ronan Keating, Glenda Gilson, Hector, and Samantha Mumba in various disguises - proved to be a big hit with viewers.

The Comedy Club gets set to move to Fridays

THE COMEDY Club in Cuba* is a Galway institution and is synonymous with Sunday nights in the city, but nothing stays the same forever and a change is on the way as the club is about to move to a new slot on Fridays.

Paddy Courtney (Paddywhackery, Prison Break, and the little purple guy in the Lotto ads) plays the Comedy Club this Sunday at 8.30pm and has the distinction of being the last comic to play at the Sunday night slot.

At the age of 18 American comedian Doug Stanhope left his suburban home outside Boston behind and travelled to Los Angeles to become rich and famous. He appeared in a number of TV movies and uncredited extra roles and eventually he left acting behind to pursue a lucrative career in telemarketing. After breaking up with his then girlfriend Doug decided that the only road open to him was the world of stand-up comedy and in 1995 he won the San Francisco comedy competition. Throughout his career Stanhope has been somewhat controversial and in recent years has toured with a bunch of comics under the banner of The Unbookables. He has upset the sensibilities of the booking agents at the Montreal Just For Laughs Festival, The Edinburgh Comedy Festival and the Kilkenny Cat Laughs Festival. Stanhope makes his way to Galway on Wednesday September 3 to play The Laughter Lounge at Roisin Dubh.

Comedian Jon Kenny goes back to front at the Town Hall Theatre

AFTER SUCCESSFULLY battling Hodgkin’s disease more than eight years ago, Limerick-born comedian Jon Kenny has made a remarkable return to form and Galway audiences are in for a treat when Kenny brings his show to the Town Hall Theatre from Thursday July 31 to Saturday August 2.
