As part of its Bach season, Music for Galway is delighted to present the Irish Baroque Orchestra’s production of Bach masterpiece, St. Matthew’s Passion, in Galway’s Cathedral on Saturday March 25 at 7.30pm.

The Irish Association of Youth Orchestras (IAYO) is delighted to return to the National Concert Hall on Saturday, February 11, for their Annual Festival of Youth Orchestras.

Galway Youth Orchestra, which is celebrating 40 years of bringing young people from both county and city together to make beautiful music, will hold its Autumn Auditions on Saturday September 3, in the Anno Santo Hotel, Threadneedle Rd, Salthill from 10am to 12pm.

Years ago, there was neither an independent community orchestra nor a musical instrument teaching system in Galway city or county. A handful of schools, mostly run by religious orders, taught a small range of instruments and would put a small orchestra together for their annual school show or operetta, their music teachers being very influential in passing on a love of music to their pupils.

Galway Youth Orchestra will resume rehearsals on Saturday September 14 at 10am in its new venue at Colaiste na Coiribe, Bothar Baile na mBurcach, Ballymoneen Road.

It’s a busy time for the Mayo Youth Orchestra, directed by Dr Anne Moriarty, as they prepare for what promises to be two great evening concerts in Mayo this June. On Tuesday evening June 11, the orchestra will perform in the Great National Hotel, Ballina, together with the Waubonsie Valley High School Orchestra, from Illinois. Also taking part are members of the Bofield Ceilí Band. Then on Wednesday June 19, the Mayo Youth Orchestra will perform with the Grand Haven High School Orchestra from Michigan, in Holy Trinity Church, Westport.

THE SEVENTH annual Coole Music Orchestra Festival takes place in the Gort Community Centre this Saturday, starting at 1pm.

THE ATHENRY Music School’s fifth annual MEGA Concert will be held in the Galway Cathedral on Sunday April 14 at 3pm.

Mayo Youth Orchestra has been selected to play at the 18th Festival of Youth Orchestras at the National Concert Hall, Dublin in February. This special festival is being honoured by inclusion in the official cultural programme of the Irish Presidency of the Council of the European Union. At the festival, run by the Irish Association of Youth Orchestras, there will also be a combined string orchestra of more than 60 players from orchestras in Dublin, Denmark and Norway. The festival will take place on Saturday February 9.
