In Humbert’s Footsteps picks up national LAMA award
There was celebrations for Mayo at the Local Authorities Members Association (LAMA) awards on Saturday night when In Humbert’s Footsteps picked up the Best Gathering Event for Ireland. The festival which saw re-enactments of General Humbert’s march through Mayo during 1798 in Killala, Kilcummin, Lahardane, and Castlebar saw off competition from 10 other events for the award.
Castlebar street battle captured in new calendar
The reenactment during the summer of the famed battle known as the Castlebar Races, which attracted 10,000 spectators to the county town, has been commemorated in a 2014 calendar.
In Humbert’s Footsteps at the Linenhall
As part of the In Humbert’s Footsteps Gathering Event, the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar is delighted to present ’98 Recalled, a unique and fascinating exhibition of distinctive and previously unseen artefacts (many from private collections) and associated information pertaining to the 1798 Rebellion in Ireland, and French General Humbert’s expedition in particular. The collection of artefacts includes a selection of 1798 pikeheads, a French bayonet discovered at site of Battle of Ballinamuck, and the hat and sword belonging to French Captain Truc (who was appointed Town Commander of Ballina by General Humbert). The exhibition is presented in association with the In Humbert’s Footsteps Gathering Event Castlebar Committee. The exhibition, which takes place in the Linenhall’s Theatre space, runs until Saturday, August 24.
A bataille of festivities for Mayo
Get ready to experience Mayo’s largest Gathering celebration, In Humbert’s Footsteps, which is set to take place in Kilcummin, Killala, Lahardane and Castlebar from Thursday 15 to Sunday 18 August 2013. With participants coming from France, England, Northern and southern Ireland and further afield, the historical re-enactment of the 1798 invasion of Ireland by French forces under the command of General Humbert promises a host of events for all the family, locals and visitors alike; with many of the events free of charge. Appealing to a general audience, over 10,000 visitors are expected in Mayo for these avant-garde festivities.
