There was celebrations for Mayo at the Local Authorities Members Association (LAMA ) awards on Saturday night when In Humbert’s Footsteps picked up the Best Gathering Event for Ireland. The festival which saw re-enactments of General Humbert’s march through Mayo during 1798 in Killala, Kilcummin, Lahardane, and Castlebar saw off competition from 10 other events for the award.
Innisturk also took the Most Innovative Local Authority Project Award for the art installation Spirit of Place.
Mellet loses as Weir goes solo
Long standing county councillor Joe Mellett lost the Ballina area Fine Gael selection convention on Saturday night. The current party whip on the council failed to get the nod for the newly enlarged Ballina electoral area for the upcoming local elections. Sitting councillors Jarlath Munnelly from Killala and Bonniconlon’s John O’Hara were selected alongside newcomers Neil Cruise from Foxford and Padraig Staunton from Crossmolina.
Current Ballina town councillor Mark Winters also failed in his attempt to get a nomination, leaving the Fine Gael party without a candidate from the Ballina town area for the elections.
Current councillor Seamus Weir did not put his name forward for selection on the night and has said that he is going to run as an independent anti-pylon candidate. The Knockmore based politician has been an outspoken critic of the Gridwest project in recent times.
Kiltane are going to Croke Park
There was much celebration in the Erris area yesterday, when Kiltane booked their place in the All Ireland intermediate club championship final with a six point win over Clyde Rovers from Cork.
