Mayo inspired project to plant 1,798 trees

A project which began in Mayo will see 1,798 trees planted across Ireland to mark the Rebellion of 1798.

The project, 1798 - Cultivating a Legacy, originated in Mayo from In Humbert’s Footsteps 2014 and is supported by Ballina Beverages and Coillte.

The 1,798 trees are being planted to symbolically replace the trees which were cut down and used as weapons during the Rebellion.

A tree will be formally planted in the grounds of Belleek Castle in Ballina today close to the old ‘French Road’ where General Jean Joseph Amable Humbert and his Franco-Irish army entered Ballina in 1798.

This year’s In Humbert’s Footsteps Festival, taking place in June in Ballina, will also be launched at today’s tree planting.
