The reenactment during the summer of the famed battle known as the Castlebar Races, which attracted 10,000 spectators to the county town, has been commemorated in a 2014 calendar.
The proceeds from the Races of Castlebar Calendar will support the Mayo Suicide Liaison Project at the local family centre.
Mayor of Castlebar, Councillor Noreen Heston, will perform the official launch in Lough Lannagh Village on Monday at 8pm.
In keeping with the Humbert theme, there will be just 1,798 copies of the calendar printed, representing the year when the French General Humbert led a Franco-Irish army of just 2,000 against a 6,000 strong British army. Despite their greater numbers, the British army fled the battlefield, running in disarray through the streets of Castlebar and out of the town. It is because of this flight that the battle came to be known as the Races of Castlebar.
As part of The Gathering celebrations, the battle was reenacted, complete with muskets, cannons ,and red coats, on August 18.
The reenactment was a spectacular event and imagery from the day makes up the Races of Castlebar Calendar 2014.
Councillor Ger Deere described the creation of the calendar.
“Hundreds of photos were submitted and an independent panel picked out what they felt really captured the atmosphere in the county town on Sunday August 18.
“There has been a huge response both locally and overseas,” he added. “The organisers are trying to set up an online payment system to facilitate the many Castlebar people all over the world who may not be home for Christmas but who would certainly want to have this part of Castlebar history.”
