Mayo success in juvenile finals
Fri, Apr 09, 2010
The provincial juvenile B finals hosted at An Sportlann, Castlebar, on Sunday week last resulted in some very close matches and a few favourable results for Mayo contenders.
While Bofield’s Michael Conlon did lose out in the boys’ u-12 final, the club did not have too long to wait for their first success of the day as the impressive Darren Langan defeated the fancied Ross Walsh of Roscommon in a thrilling boys’ u-13 final on an overall 15-12, 13-15, 15-11 scoreline. Ciaran Maye and Michael Dunleavy from Charlestown lost out to Galway in the boys’ u-13 doubles final while impressive Ballaghaderreen duo Christopher Finn and Dermot Mullaney secured the boys’ u-15 doubles title with a well-deserved 15-6, 15-12 win over Galway. Bofield picked up their second title of the afternoon when Colin and Brendan Conlon beat Tyler and Eric Fatharta of Galway in a marathon final on a 15-12, 15-14 scoreline. Shauna Ruane from Belcarra won the girls’ u-14 title while Laura Gannon from Aughagower was narrowly beaten in the girls’ u-17 decider.

At the start of every season winning the title is the ultimate goal for most sides, but in this years Elvery’s Sports Super League avoiding the drop is a big a concern for a lot of teams. This year will see four sides dropping out of the top division before it becomes a more compact and competitive eight team league for the 2011 campaign. Last year only one team (Kilmore) dropped out of the top flight with Swinford replacing them this season, after Westport United B won the Premier Division title but were not allowed to come up. But this year if you finish between 10th and seventh place in the league and you are dropping through the trap door.
If the four to go down rule was in place last season, Castlebar Celtic, Fahy Rovers, Straide, and Foxford United would all be in the Premier Division with Ballyheane and Snugboro United just holding on by the skin of their teeth. This season the candidates for the drop early on do not look a lot different. Swinford are back in the top flight after a couple of seasons in the lower league, and new manager Alan Gough is going to have a very big task on his hands to keep the east Mayo side in the top flight. Getting off to a good start would be half the battle, but on Sunday they were handed the toughest of opening tests, hosting the current champions Ballina Town. Castlebar Celtic just clung on to their top division status last season, and while they may be one of the marquee names of domestic soccer in the county, new manager Paul Large is dealing with a uneven deck. All Celtic’s top players will be involved in the Newstalk A League, so their Super League team are in reality the B team, and while there is a good pool of underage talent to pick from, it is going to be a large task for the new man to keep them out of the relegation dog fight. This weekend they have got to make the short hop to the Sportspark to take on old foes Westport United in a tasty season opener.

The Mayo ladies’ senior football team will wrap up their 2010 National Football League campaign when they square off against old rivals Cork in Ballinrobe on Sunday at 3pm. The Rebelettes have been a thorn in Mayo’s side over the past number of years, beating them last year in the league final comfortably in Kiltoom, before Mayo put their season back together and made their way to the All Ireland semi-final and ran the Munster ladies to the wire, with Cork just holding them off in the end.

Ballyhaunis rally driver Shane Buckley brought his Citroen C2R2 Max home in a fine eighth place overall on Sunday's Moto Midlands Stages Rally. As well as winning class six by nearly three minutes, Buckley and co-driver Thomas Maguire from Meath were the second highest placed front wheel drive finishers on the Rooskey based event. Indeed they had been as high as fifth overall before losing time on the last batch of stages with a wrong tyre choice.
