The weekend Stableford competition sponsored by Gilvarry and Associates, was won by Dermot MacMahon with a score of 37, Paraic Cuffe just held off Dave McHale to claim second place when both men finished on 35, with Cuffe’s score on the back six just swinging it in his favour.
The ladies competition was won by Aine McDonald who scored a fine 33. Geraldine O’Malley’s strong back six finish saw her hold off Kitty O’Connor to claim second place when they both finished on 33. The youth’s competition was won by Conor Holian with a score of 36. This weekend’s golf competition is a strokeplay event which is sponsored by Rings and Things and is the first round of the Golfer of the Year competition.
Ballyhaunis
Today Friday April 2, Ballyhaunis Golf Club will host a nine-hole re-entry competition for ladies and gents. The competition is in aid of Serve development projects in South Africa and Mozambique.
Claremorris
In last weekend’s open winter league the side of J McDonnell, P Killeen, M Higgins, and P Geraghty took top sport with a score of 90pts. In second place were B Kearns, M McNamara, R Woolley, and M Kelly who finished with 87 pts, while in third also on 87 pts, was the team of G Noone, P Noone, N McDonnell, and D Roche. The winning team in the competition will win a golfing trip to Spain sponsored by the McWilliam Park Hotel.
The club will be holding a open weekend this coming Bank Holiday weekend. Dermody auctioneers will sponsor the competition, with entry €15 for visitors and €7 for members. Jimmy Haggarty, European Senior Tour professional, will hold junior lessons at the club on April 6, 7, and 8 at 10am, 11am, and 12 noon each day. It costs €5 per hour per junior.
Sight for Saoirse
The Sight for Saoirse Am Am will be held at Claremorris Golf Club on Friday and Saturday April 2 and 3. There are still some slots available for this very worthy cause. For further information contact Chris at Claremorris Golf Club at 094 9371257.
Westport
This year’s winter league final will be between Tony Browne and Neil Chambers. There are no details about the Chambers’ semi-final victory but Tony Browne secured a famous singles victory over Carl Rose on the 16th to claim the match. What was surprising was that Rose got off to his usual start, par-par-birdie-par but was unable to maintain his good form.
An honourable mention to Sean Kelly who won the Open Day in Castle Dargen on Saturday in miserable weather conditions. Gerry Hughes has confirmed that there will be a number of counting competitions during the Easter Bank Holiday weekend. The draw sheet for the 2010 Murtagh Foursomes will be posted in the gents’ locker this week.
