The Mayo ladies’ senior football team will wrap up their 2010 National Football League campaign when they square off against old rivals Cork in Ballinrobe on Sunday at 3pm. The Rebelettes have been a thorn in Mayo’s side over the past number of years, beating them last year in the league final comfortably in Kiltoom, before Mayo put their season back together and made their way to the All Ireland semi-final and ran the Munster ladies to the wire, with Cork just holding them off in the end.
This year’s league campaign has seen Mayo split the difference over six games so far, picking up wins over Tyrone, Dublin, and Kerry, but going down to Laois, Monaghan, and to local rivals Galway in the last round of the competition. Mayo will have a break from the end of the league until June 19 when they take on Sligo in the semi-final off the Connacht Championship.
First round of league action last weekend
The first round of action in the Mayo senior football leagues threw in last weekend. John Healy’s Ballina Stephenites saw off county champions Charlestown by 1-12 to 0-11 in Ballina in Division 1A. John Maughan’s Crossmolina Deel Rovers had a point to spare over local rivals Moy Davitts, with Mark Leonard scoring the winning point. Ballinrobe also started brightly in the league as they did last season, seeing off Ballaghaderreen by a point in Ballinrobe by 0-10 to 0-9 with Sean Burke getting half his side’s scores. Kenneth Mortimer got his tenure as manager of his native Shrule Glencorrib off to a winning start when his side held off fellow south Mayo men Claremorris to record a 0-11 to 1-5 win with the Mayo trio of Conor Mortimer (0-5 ), Trevor Mortimer (0-3 ), and Mark Ronaldson (0-3 ), the decisive factor for the home side.
Ballintubber and Westport drew, but Ballintubber won. Both sides had agreed to play the game as a league and Kelly Cup double up, so while the league points were shared Ballintubber ran out winners in extra time to claimed the Kelly Cup final spot. In division 1b, Breaffy left Kiltane with no points in the bag after the home side had three points to spare over the west Mayo men. Garrymore held off Kiltimagh by 1-12 to 2-5, while Islandeady won the battle out west by a point against Tourmakeady. Colm McManamon’s Burrishoole went to Erris and came home with a point after a 0-8 to 0-8 draw against Belmullet.
