The Liam McEntee memorial shield

Soccer

The opening match of the new Mayo League season will be the Charity Shield final between the Elverys Super League winners Ballina Town and the Chadwicks Cup winners Manulla FC. This match will take place in Milebush Park on Easter Sunday at 3pm.

The Mayo League announced during the week that the Charity Shield will now be called The Liam McEntee Memorial Shield in honour of Liam McEntee, a referee with the Mayo League for many years, who passed away a few months ago from cancer.

The Mayo League has also decided that all revenue from the gate and tickets will be presented to Rock Rose House, a cancer support service, which has its cancer support house in Castlebar. It is fitting that the money collected should be presented to this worthy cause, as it is a voluntary organisation and depend on donations like this. The League is urging people to attend the game or buy a ticket from any club or league member. Tickets are €5 to this worthy cause. The leagues hope to name a different charity from around the county each season.

The Liam McEntee Shield has been sponsored by a close friend of Liam McEntee for many years Christy Kavanagh, the league is very grateful to Mr Kavanagh for his nice gesture and the name of Liam McEntee will be remembered for many years to come.
