Burke wins Mayo autocross by a whisker
Fri, Aug 13, 2010
An extraordinarily close finish saw Walter Burke from Williamstown take victory at the Mayo and District Motorsport Club’s loose surface autocross event on Sunday. The Ford Escort driver defeated James McGreal from Foxford by the smallest possible of margins — a mere one hundredth of a second.
A healthy field of 40 competitors had assembled for round four of Mayo Motorsport Club’s popular autocross series held at Harrington’s Quarry near Swinford, with all eyes on James McGreal to see if the Subaru driver could repeat his victory of the previous round. The Foxford man wasn’t long getting into his stride, setting a fastest time of 4:26.07 on the first of three timed runs. He was less than half a second up on nearest challenger, Andrew Mackarel from Fermanagh, with the class two Vauxhall Nova of Maynooth’s Ciaran McCullagh an incredible third overall — this despite breaking an engine mount, and up against much more powerful machinery.

The Premiership may be back on Saturday, but for the discerning Mayo soccer supporter there is only one place to be and that is in Belleek at 6.30pm. With three games to go and the title run-in on a knife edge, league leaders Westport United will be making the journey north to face the defending champions Ballina Town, who are breathing down their necks in the title run-in. Westport United stand two points ahead of Ballina after 15 games each; a win for the defending champions would put them back on top of the table ahead of their final two games.

It’s not to often that when you go to a game, two goals have gone in before you settle into the contest. But that’s what happened last Sunday night when Castlebar Celtic hosted Dundalk in the Newstalk A league in Celtic Park. In a game which saw nine goals go in over the 90 minutes, two of them hit the back of Robert Hennelly’s net before some of the crowd had even arrived, two minutes into the game. In what was at times a lopsided game, Celtic did manage to pull the gap back to only two goals with minutes to go, despite being 5-1 down at one stage midway through the second half.

Last weekend was a big one as far as the club championship was concerned. There were a number of games played that decided the make-up of the quarter finals in the senior championship. All went according to pre-game predictions, but a number of teams with ambitions of landing the county title really did give indications that they are going to take some beating. Ballina, Knockmore and Charlestown in particular had really impressive victories that caught the eye. We in Crossmolina found ourselves in a fairly precarious position with two draws from our two championship encounters going into last Sunday’s game, so we knew exactly what we had to do. We were therefore understandably happy with the way we played against Garrymore.

Following the penultimate weekend of action in the group stages of the Royal Theatre senior football championship seven of the eight quarter finalists have emerged. On Saturday evening, Ballina and Knockmore booked their places in the last eight draw. Knockmore topped section four with five points from their three games thanks to a 0-15 to 0-9 win over 2008 champions Ballaghaderreen. The east Mayo men now have to navigate their way through the relegation play offs to ensure they hold on to their senior status for next season. Ballinrobe who were drawn in the group of death for not the first time in recent history, had a great chance to make the quarter final going into the last round of games. They were a point ahead of Ballina and had a home draw against the Stephenites, but it was the north Mayo men who came out on top steam rolling to an easy 3-7 to 0-9 win over Norman O'Brien's side. The performance by Ballina was a fine tribute to the late mother of Paul McGarry who died earlier in the week.

“Any of the sides we face could take points off us”- Kilgannon
Fri, Aug 06, 2010
The Super League enters its final stretch at the weekend and Westport United are three points clear at the top of the table. However Westport United manager Barry Kilgannon told the Mayo Advertiser this week that it is going to be a tough run into the title and he is taking nothing for granted. “We’ve got four very tough games left to play and any of those sides are capable of taking points off us on their day, so we have to be on top of our game from now on into the season.” While it will be a tough challenge to reclaim the title they surrendered to Ballina Town last season, Kilgannon would rather be where he is now than any of the other title chasers. “If you gave me this at the start of the season, top of the league with four games to go, of course I would have taken it, the season seems to have flown by to now. But now it’s time to push on and that starts on Sunday with Fahy Rovers. This is a local derby and they are fighting for their lives, so it’s not going to be just a matter of us showing up and collecting the points.”
