A Mayo secondary school will lose five of its teachers, cease all extra-curricular sports activities and send children home from school if a teacher reports sick once the cutbacks announced in last week’s budget are enforced. Field work, which is compulsory for pupils studying certain Leaving Certificate subjects such as geography, biology, agricultural science, home economics and history, are also set to cease with immediate effect in the school.

Fine Gael Leader, Enda Kenny TD, has encouraged every person in Mayo who is eligible to vote to check if they are on the Register of Electors. In advance of every election, many people believe they are on the register, however, when they receive no polling card, they realise that they are not on the register and it may be too late to be added.
The Fine Gael Leader has asked the local Fine Gael organisation to campaign on the issue and to encourage people to check if they are on the register. There are numerous methods of checking if a person is on the register: you can check with the County Council by phone within normal working hours (094 902 4444) or online (www.checktheregister.ie). Alternatively, anyone may also contact Enda Kenny’s Constituency Office in Castlebar by phone (094 902 5600) or by calling in.

Fine Gael Leader, Enda Kenny TD, has welcomed the move by Mayo County Council to invest €380,000 in improving accessibility throughout Castlebar. The money will fund the provision and improvement of pedestrian crossings, special paving, the removal of any significant obstructions on footpaths, and properly dropped kerbs.

Government Spokesperson on Agriculture in Seanad Éireann and Fianna Fáil Senator John Carty has welcomed the news that the EU Commissioner for Public Health has proposed an increase to 48 months in the minimum age for BSE testing of animals slaughtered for human consumption as well as emergency slaughtered and fallen animals.
