Fine Gael Leader, Enda Kenny TD, has encouraged every person in Mayo who is eligible to vote to check if they are on the Register of Electors. In advance of every election, many people believe they are on the register, however, when they receive no polling card, they realise that they are not on the register and it may be too late to be added.
The Fine Gael Leader has asked the local Fine Gael organisation to campaign on the issue and to encourage people to check if they are on the register. There are numerous methods of checking if a person is on the register: you can check with the County Council by phone within normal working hours (094 902 4444 ) or online (www.checktheregister.ie ). Alternatively, anyone may also contact Enda Kenny’s Constituency Office in Castlebar by phone (094 902 5600 ) or by calling in.
Deputy Kenny said: “The right to vote is the most important right bestowed upon any person in a democracy, and as a result it is important to check that you are in a position to vote so you can exercise your vote during the local and European elections in 2009. Many people contact me in advance of any election asking why they did not receive any polling card, only to discover that they are not on the register or may have been removed in some cases. Even those who have been on the register for years may also be removed, therefore, it is especially important for everyone to check if they are still on it.”
