Court appearance for Killala man who was stumbling onto road while drunk

A 29-year-old Killala man who was intoxicated in a public area and failed to comply with a garda direction was convicted and fined €500 at Ballina District Court this week.

Sergeant James Murphy responded to a call that there was an argument taking place on the Crossmolina Bridge on Sunday July 27 last year.

Ballina students raise over €10,000 for Crumlin

The students of St Mary’s Secondary School, Ballina are celebrating today after receiving an award for the funds they raised for the Kellogg’s Jump for Joy Schools Challenge in aid of Our Lady’s Children’s Hospital, Crumlin. In total, students from secondary schools nationwide raised €190,000 for the worthy cause. The Kellogg’s Jump for Joy Schools Challenge, which encourages students to get active while raising much needed funds for the hospital is now in its 15th year.

Mayo man at centre of Taoiseach nudes controversy

A 35-year-old man, originally from Claremorris, is at the centre of a heated debacle following the placing of two nude portraits of the Taoiseach in the National Gallery and the Royal Hibernian Academy, with the prospect that the secondary school teacher, who now resides in south Dublin, may face prosecution for the hoax, with a file being prepared for the DPP.

Mayo dairy calves destined for prison

Bóthar, the international development agency that specialises in the use of livestock, has launched an unusual appeal in Co Mayo. The organisation is seeking the donation of 26 heifer calves, one for every county in Ireland, as part of a Spring Calf Appeal to provide animals for its Shelton Abbey rehabilitation project. The Spring Calf Appeal follows last year’s successful partnership with Shelton Abbey prison facility in Co Wicklow, which has agreed to care for the animals at the prison’s on-site farm as part of their rehabilitation programme for inmates.

Barrett demands response on Mayo roads

Castlebar Town Councillor Harry Barrett has labelled as “short-sighted” a decision by Government to halt planned spending on almost 80 national road-building schemes, worth billions of euro, until further notice. Four schemes between Longford and Westport on the N5 will be affected along with four other schemes on the N13, N14, and N15 group of roads in the northwest.
