Two schools from Mayo have qualified for the national finals of the F1 in schools technology challenge.
St Colman’s College, Claremorris, and St Gerald’s College, Castlebar, will be flying the flag for Mayo at the finals in Griffith College, Dublin, on April 28. The F1 Schools Technology Challenge is powered in Ireland by Honda, organised by the Irish Computer Society, and supported by Discover Science and Engineering.
The International F1 in Schools competition challenges second level school students to design, build, and race model Formula 1 cars powered by air compressed canisters. The winning team will go on to represent Ireland in the World Championships to take place in 2010 and compete against 27 other countries from around the world. Winning teams will also be presented with cash prizes to be put towards computers in their schools and much more.
In the regional final junior section St Colman’s Spitfire team won the best team sponsorship and marketing while St Gerald’s West Coast Racers team won best team website and best use of ICT and CAD in the senior section. A second St Colman’s team, V-Tec Racing, have also qualified for the finals to compete in the junior section.
