Ring derides means test as ‘mean-test’ on elderly

The means test for the over 70s medical card should be re-named a 'mean test’, according to the Fine Gael spokesperson on Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Deputy Michael Ring. The Mayo TD said the means test was causing senior citizens untold anxiety and pressure.

Dep Ring stated: “Under the new regulations the over 70 applicants have to send their forms to Dublin and this involves a lot of paperwork. I would have to question the cost factor in all this.”

St Gerald’s centenary committee launches major fundraising drive

On May 7 next, St Gerald’s College centenary committee brings the hugely popular Who wants to be a Thousandaire to the Royal Theatre, Castlebar. This show has attracted large audiences all over Ireland over the past seven years and is fast becoming the most popular source of fundraising for schools and clubs. Contestants are drawn from ticket sales and each contestant will play for €1,000. The show is fully computerised with 50/50, ask the audience and a brilliant video linked phone a friend. The questions and four possible answers and displayed on two 8ft x 6ft screens, one at each side of the stage.

Jobs in jeopardy with €8m cut in road grants

Mayo County Council’s government grants for the 2009 road work scheme were slashed in last week’s budget by €8 million, the Mayo Advertiser can reveal. This includes a €5.5 million reduction in the regional and local road restoration grant from €13.1 million to €7.6 million.
