Proposal for allocation of funds to Inishturk

During the first sitting of Mayo County Council on the island of Inishturk for over 18 years, Fianna Fáil Councillor Margaret Adams this week proposed that a special grant of approximately €20,000 per annum be allocated from Mayo County Council to the islands, including Inishturk, as part of a special development fund, on the condition that 20 per cent of the total amount be funded locally.

The long awaited new theatre in Ballina got the go ahead to move to the tender stage this week, Ballina Town Council Mayor Michelle Mulherin revealed to the Mayo Advertiser yesterday. “The county manager has given the go ahead to let the project go ahead to the tender stage this week,” she said. “The tender documents have been prepared and will be advertised next week.”

Six hundred students, teachers — both male and female — parents, and members of the community of Ballina will don their high heels today, Friday, in an attempt to gain a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for the most entrants in a high heel race. Students have organised the race as part of Kellogg’s Jump for Joy Schools Challenge, which encourages students to get active while raising much needed funds for Crumlin Children’s Hospital. The people of Ballina are being urged to strap on their high heels and get involved as a minimum of 1,000 participants are needed to break the existing record.

During Monday’s County Council meeting on Inishturk, Councillor Frank Chambers put forward a Notice of Motion that Mayo County Council introduce a policy in co-operation with oil suppliers to deal with the numerous oil spillages on our main and county roads.
