Proposal for allocation of funds to Inishturk

During the first sitting of Mayo County Council on the island of Inishturk for over 18 years, Fianna Fáil Councillor Margaret Adams this week proposed that a special grant of approximately €20,000 per annum be allocated from Mayo County Council to the islands, including Inishturk, as part of a special development fund, on the condition that 20 per cent of the total amount be funded locally.

This proposal was seconded by party colleague Cllr Frank Chambers, who added that the council have failed the islands with the continuing population decline, and asked the county manager to look to seek assistance from the County Enterprise Board to focus on job stimulation on the islands and develop indigenous industry on Inishturk as well as strengthening the tourism and craft sector.

County Manager Des Mahon said that with regard to funding the council would endeavour to do their best in whatever way they can.
