The August Bank Holiday weekend in 2008 accounted for the second highest number of fatal collisions for a Bank Holiday period and saw four people lose their lives on Irish roads. Two of these drivers were in the 16 to 30 age group, so An Garda Síochána is appealing to all road users, and in particular young male drivers, to slow down and take care on the roads.

The residents of Carracastle have been informed that Mayo County Council has no funds to allow Carracastle Group Water Scheme to progress, with Councillor Joe Mellett saying that this news is “not good enough” as a “proper water scheme which in conjunction with a new sewerage scheme is essential for the development of the village”.

Minister for Labour Affairs and local Fianna Fáil TD Dara Calleary has welcomed the confirmation that the income limit to qualify for the student maintenance grant has been increased. This will lead to more Mayo students being awarded the grant for the coming college year, according to Minister Calleary.

Mayo County Council is delighted to bring to the public an exciting exhibition which shows images of the items in the collection and the story of how it was discovered in association with the airport. This exhibition shows in images what the public will see in reality in Ballina in September when the actual library will be unveiled during National Heritage Week.
