The residents of Carracastle have been informed that Mayo County Council has no funds to allow Carracastle Group Water Scheme to progress, with Councillor Joe Mellett saying that this news is “not good enough” as a “proper water scheme which in conjunction with a new sewerage scheme is essential for the development of the village”.
In a reply received by the Fine Gael councillor, Mayo County Council stated that tenders were obtained for construction of Carracastle Group Water Scheme last year and a tender recommendation received from the consulting engineers. Unfortunately, allocations this year are well below estimated requirements, and as a consequence there are no funds to allow Carracastle GWS and several other proposed new schemes to proceed to construction stage. Carracastle GWS also requires substantial Clár funding in addition to Department of Environment funding.
Cllr Mellett says that he intends raising the matter at the next meeting of Mayo County Council and has also asked the Government deputies to deliver the project.
