A pilgrimage to Medjugorje will take place from Wednesday August 19 to Wednesday August 26. The spiritual director for the pilgrimage is Fr Michael Treacey. The tickets cost €579 each if purchased and paid for in full by Monday February 2 (a saving of €100 per ticket). Otherwise the cost of the ticket after is €679. Common sense parenting course in Castlebar

A common sense parenting course for parents of children aged from two years to five years will start in Le Cheile, Castlebar, on Wednesday January 28 for seven weeks. Ballyhaunis Fit4life is holding its registration night on Tuesday January 20. Anyone interested in joining should turn up on the night at 6.30pm at the Ballyhaunis Enterprise Centre, Clare Road (turn up towards SuperValu). The fee is €40 and this is handed over to Mayo AC for annual membership, it is affiliated to Athletics Ireland. Anyone is welcome to come along in the meantime any Tuesday evening at 7pm or Saturday morning at 9am and join in for a trial. The club will make every effort to assist newcomers who wish to get fit through walking or jogging. The group normally meets at the Ball Court in the Friary Field (across from Londis, Abbey Street). If you have arthritis or fibromyalgia and live in the Castlebar area why not start the New Year off by joining one of the adapted exercise classes or walking groups. Exercise is the best way to help manage pain and maintain mobility. It is also a great way to develop better fitness and have some fun. The walking group takes place on Tuesdays at 6.15pm, meeting at Castlebar Tennis Club, and the adapted Pilates group meets on Fridays at 6.15pm in Castlebar Tennis Club. Lynda Huxley, of GMIT Campus, Castlebar, will give a talk called The Amazing Swifts of Mayo on Tuesday January 20 at 8pm at the Westport Coast Hotel. These amazing birds do not touch land for the first two years of their lives, and only do so later to build nests and raise their young. There has been a 46 per cent drop in the population of these birds in Ireland, and Huxley will discuss the reasons for this, conservation measures to preserve the birds, and tell us about these harbingers of spring.
