On March 23, the second annual Challenge the Greenway event will take place in Westport. The Western Greenway is a picturesque off-road walk/cycle trail that traverses Ireland’s Atlantic coast and follows the old Achill/Westport railway-line. The challenge will set off from Achill Sound, pass through Mulranny and Newport and finally finish up in Westport.

For the fifth year running Vichy introduced the nationwide competition in Irish pharmacies and revealed the Vichy Advisor of the Year 2012. Vichy developed this competition with the aim to engage and motivate dermo-advisors, raise the standard of advice and to promote skin health through Irish pharmacies nationwide. The lucky winners were recently announced at the glamorous awards ceremony in the five-star Westin Hotel, Westmoreland Street, hosted by popular TV presenter and renowned beauty journalist Laura Bermingham. Tina Mc Hale from Staunton’s Pharmacy, Castlebar was one of the finalists who attended the awards.

Mayo wellbeing campaign delivers tips for keeping positive to Mayo households

The campaign is being led by the Mayo Suicide Prevention Alliance, a group which first formed in Mayo in 2009. It is made up of a wide range of organisations and groups working in the area of mental health and suicide prevention in the county.

Some years back the largest study ever conducted into stopping smoking was undertaken in the USA and published in the New Scientist magazine. It studied everything from willpower, nicotine patches, positive thinking, placebos, chewing gum - and the conclusion was that most of the methods turned out to be hopeless. Hypnosis however came out as the most effective anti-smoking technique. Figures showed that hypnotherapy was 300 per cent more successful than nicotine replacement therapies and 500 per cent more successful than methods that are based on willpower alone.
