Vanbrugh Quartet at The Linenhall

For a real classical treat, look no further than the Vanbrugh Quartet, with an appropriately autumnal programme titled Harvest at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Wednesday, October 21 at 8pm. 

Comprising Gregory Ellis (violin), Keith Pascoe (violin), Simon Aspell (viola) and Christopher Marwood (cello), the Vanbrugh Quartet is one of Europe’s most successful quartets, internationally recognised for its beauty of sound, clarity of texture and integrity of interpretation within an unusually wide and varied range of repertoire. In 1986 it became RTÉ’s resident string quartet and won the London International String Quartet Competition in 1988. Familiar visitors to all the main UK festivals, the Vanbrugh Quartet also broadcasts frequently for BBC Radio 3 and performs regularly at London’s Wigmore Hall and South Bank. The Non Prophet Festival closes this weekend

Claremorris will be alive with activity this weekend when the Non Prophet Festival winds down with two hectic days of events. On tomorrow, Saturday, September 26 from 12 noon to 5pm, a theatre workshop which will serve as an introduction to theatre, drama, and stage acting.

The workshop costs €20 and includes a ticket for The Claremorris Players' performance of A Wake in the West at 8.30pm in the Town Hall Theatre, which will also be a festival fundraiser and this will be a great opportunity to see the final production of this hilarious production with a stellar cast of local performers and it will bring tears to your eyes, with laughter. Mayo trad musicians bound for the States

Two young Mayo musicians are preparing to depart to the United States as part of the Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann tour of North America this coming October. Éadaoin Ní Mhaicín from Castlebar Comhaltas and Alannah Thornburgh from the Michael Davitt branch of CCÉ in Swinford are among an elite group of traditional musicians who are heading to the United States in late October for a series of concerts in the eastern United States.

Canadian Orpheus Male Choir for Castlebar show

Hosted by the Mayo International Choral Festival, a 50-strong male voice choir from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, will perform on Friday, September 25 with the Mayo Male Voice Choir at the Church of the Holy Rosary, Castlebar. This is one of Canada’s leading male voice choirs and have toured extensively, including Canada, Europe, Britain and Ireland and have performed more than 460 concerts in venues such as the Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto, St Paul’s Cathedral, Westminster Abbey and the Royal Albert Hall in London.

Major renovations at Mayo Leisure Point this September

From Monday September 21 Mayo Leisure Point will undergo major renovations that will see it closed for approximately three weeks to carry out works. However bowling will cease from Wednesday, September 16. The all new bowling lanes, bowling machines, and reception will be revealed when Mayo Leisure Point reopens fully in mid October.

Fiver Friday returns this weekend Friday, September 11 and Saturday, September 12 from 7pm to 10pm where bowling is €5 per person. The following weekend there is a reduced price for Laser and Nokey’s Adventureland when you show your same day cinema ticket. One hour in Nokey’s Adventureland is €3 and one game of laser is €3 when you visit Mayo Movie World.
