Claremorris Golf Club host Gaelic games comedy show for worthwhile charity

The Pull, the popular comedy show written by John Corless and Liam Horan of Half Solid Productions, has been confirmed for Claremorris Town Hall for Friday, February 19, at 8.30pm.

Local hosts on the night will be Claremorris Golf Club and the event is in aid of Rock Rose House Mayo Cancer Support. The Pull is a lively comedy set in the fictional town of Ballybore, where the local GAA club claim to pre-date the foundation of the GAA itself by some 130 years.

Marc Roberts is appearing at Westport Town Hall Theatre this coming Sunday, February 14 with his show The Music of John Denver, This show offers a perfect end to your Valentine’s night after visiting some of the wonderful restaurants in town. In 1997 Marc Roberts came to international prominence when he represented Ireland in the Eurovision Song Contest coming in at a credible second place with “Mysterious Woman”. Marc’s first self-titled album was released and he has released five albums including his current album A Tribute to the Music of John Denver which went to number one in the country iTunes Charts.

Raised in the heart of Mayo, surrounded by her musical family Joanne Keegan was encouraged to develop her innate talent for singing, playing guitar and fiddle from the age of ten. Her father Tony sang American country and often rebel songs at bedtime and Marion her mother ensured she received a rich traditional upbringing. She discovered Etta James, BB King, Sippie Wallis, Janis Ian in her early teens and it was a natural progression for her to move towards studying Dramatic arts and music performance. Gaining confidence singing in musicals she joined a band in Galway as a backing vocalist but it was whilst busking around Europe in her late teens that she discovered her true voice. After many years of diarising her experiences she attended IMRO song writing workshops in Dublin and Killarney, writing with Kieran Mc Evoy which cemented her vocation.

Joanne now mentors mature students to enrich their repertoire and develop their confidence to be able to enjoy performing . ”Music is my constant companion” she says –“my stalwart medicine and I believe it is of essential benefit to our mental health whether you sing, play or listen.”

Linenhall Film Club presents Tangerines

Linenhall Film Club continues its spring 2016 season with the eloquent humanist Estonian/Georgian film, Tangerines, on Tuesday February 16 at 8pm.

Set in 1992, during the growing conflict between Georgia and Abkhazian separatists in the wake of the Soviet Union's dissolution, this compassionate tale focuses on two Estonian immigrant farmers who decide to remain in Georgia long enough to harvest their tangerine crop. When the war comes to their doorsteps, Ivo, played by legendary Estonian actor Lembit Ulfsak, takes in two wounded soldiers from opposite sides.

Award-winning writers Colin Barrett and Ger Reidy will read from and talk about their work at the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar on Thursday February 11, at 8pm.

Author of the multi-award-winning short story anthology Young Skins, Colin Barrett was born in 1982 in Mayo. His work has been published in The Stinging Fly and in the anthologies Sharp Sticks, Driven Nails and Town and Country. Colin was the winner of the 2014 Frank O'Connor International Short Story Award, the 2014 Rooney Prize for Irish Literature, and the Guardian First Book Award, also in 2014.
