Planet Earth: Our Place in Space, a new temporary exhibition based on the geological collections from the National Museum of Ireland – Natural History this week opened in the National Museum Ireland - Country Life, Turlough Park, Castlebar . The exhibition will run until the end of February 2009.

This exhibition provides an opportunity to see at first hand some of the most important rocks and minerals that make up our home. It includes a collection of meteorites, many of which fell in Ireland, that tell us more about the origins of our planet. One of the exhibition highlights is the Limerick Meteorite that fell near Adare, County Limerick in 1813, Ireland's largest ever meteorite weighing in at 27 kilos. These specimens will be used to explain what meteorites tell us about the early solar system and also what we know about the earth as a planet. Minerals and rocks will further illustrate what the earth is made of and its nature as a planet.

And as that very dust settles and life at the Linenhall Arts Centre returns to business as usual and what we somewhat ironically refer to as “normality”, we’d just like to offer a big vote of thanks to all our sponsors and volunteers for their support: our sponsors: Mayo Leisure Point, Castlebar Credit Union, Lough Lannagh Village, McDonald’s Castlebar, TJ Gaughan Construction Company Ltd, Elephant Bean Bags, Baxter Healthcare; our funders The Arts Council, Mayo County Council, Castlebar Town Council, Fáilte Ireland, Ireland’s West; The assistance of An Garda Síochana, Civil Defence, HSE Rural Training Centre Castlebar, Bata Fada, Mayo Artsquad, the Tweed Centre Castlebar, Fahey’s Hardware, Woodies DIY, TF Royal Theatre and Event Centre, St Patrick’s Boys’ School, Bettina Peterseil and drummers, our Transition Year volunteers, Access>CINEMA, Children’s Books Ireland, Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Norwegian Association for Performing Arts, all those who donated books to the Stories Room, all the volunteers for Lough Lannagh Lights, and all who made this another brilliant RoolaBoola experience! Things are about to get very spooky at Bar Ritz!

Fri, Oct 24, 2008

Next Friday night Finbar Hoban Presents…the very special Hallowe’en Monster Mash fancy dress party with Grand Pocket Orchestra and Music for Dead Birds. After last week’s spectacular show with We Should be Dead, Sons of Gingerbread and Short Notice, the fun-loving music community of Castlebar were treated to a night of different traditions of rock and punk music. The show kicked off with Short Notice playing covers which warmed the heart of the crowd to the lead singer’s voice, and at half ten Sons of Gingerbread took to the stage to a huge round of applause from their GMIT, college friends and played an outstanding set which kept the audience’s attention till the very last song!

And then came the final act of the night when We Should Be Dead took to the stage and began their set with opening track “I Fell in Love with You” right through to “Ladies’ Night” and the ever enjoyable “Reason” from their recent album Forget Romance, Lets Dance. At times during this band’s tremendous show lead singer Tara Nix would wonder down into the Bar Ritz faithful crowd with microphone in hand and amazing the crowd with her talanted and excellent vocals. At the end of their set people were commenting on the energy of the band’s live show.
