Tom Crean, the intrepid Antarctic explorer and one of Ireland’s unsung heroes, is brought to life in this dramatic and humorous solo performance by Aidan Dooley. This amazing show has now been seen by huge numbers of people all over the world.

Culture Night at Ballina Arts Centre

This year Culture Night will take place on Friday September 25 and Ballina Arts Centre is presenting a programme of events and activities aimed at all ages, with hopefully something for all tastes. The programme includes Shortscreen Cinema, where a number of short films will be shown from 5pm to 6pm and 8pm to 10.30pm. Viewers can drop in and out of the cinema. Many of the films to be screened were made through the Filmbase Shorts scheme. Waiting Room, made by a number of local teenagers during a workshop at Ballina Arts Centre in 2007, will also be screened.

From 6pm to 8pm, there will be an open mic poetry night MC’d by poet Terry McDonagh. This will be an opportunity for poets to read their work to a small audience in intimate surroundings. Poets can register beforehand or just turn up on the night. During Culture Night the Altered Images exhibition will remain open until 10.30pm. Upstairs in the Arts Centre, there will be an exhibition response workshop area, where children and adults can participate in a variety of workshop activities in response to the exhibition, facilitated by a team of professional art workers. All Culture Night activities at Ballina Arts Centre are free of charge and all are welcome. We especially encourage family visits. Culture Night is an initiative co-ordinated by Temple Bar Cultural Trust and supported by the Department of Arts, Sport and Tourism in partnership with Mayo County Council and participating venues.

Oddsocks Revival was born in Sligo, Ireland with the sole purpose of bringing you good time rock ‘n’ roll, funk and blues. A striking stage presence and blend of music styles has given them a solid rep as a band who will keep the good times rolling. These four talented lads have been playing together since the summer of 2003 and have developed a powerful connection on stage which is evident at every gig.

GMIT graduates exhibit their work

A group exhibition featuring selected works from this year’s graduate art and design class, GMIT will take place at Mayo County Library, Castlebar September 23. The exhibition is titled Lost & Found and features sample works of the 12 graduate students from the class of 2009. Subject matter promises to traverse a diversity of topics, ranging from the exploration of landscapes, to intimacy, to the everyday mundane. The exhibition will be opened by artist Deirdre Walsh at 5pm on September 23 and will be followed by a cheese and wine reception. All are welcome.
