From last April until now seems like the blink of an eye, but in that time a major brand new musical has been honed, cast, marketed and brought to the stage in the west of Ireland. Yes, the much-heralded dramatic musical in two acts, On a Wing and Prayer launched boldly into the public sphere for three nights last night Thursday, November 25 and will run until tomorrow Saturday November 27, at the Royal Theatre, Castlebar. And all in aid of a great cause, the Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation, and specifically for the Foundation’s Palliative Care Service.

Amateur drama award recipients announced

St Patrick’s Drama Group, Westport has been awarded the Mayo County Council Amateur Drama Award for 2010. Applications were assessed by an external, independent, expert panel who were very impressed with the standard in the county. St Patrick’s Drama Group have had an extremely active year and took to the stage with three well received productions – Makem and Clancy Are Coming by the group’s own Ciarán MacSuibhne, Martin McDonagh’s The Cripple of Inishmaan and Michael J McGinnelly’s A Wake in the West, which they staged in Dublin in March. The group have shown exemplary dedication to the future of their group and to the promotion of amateur drama in Mayo. Mayo County Council amateur drama awards are assessed on the following criteria: Innovation; development of excellence; quality and creativity. All amateur drama groups based in the county are eligible to apply for the award. Pat Shortt has been a household name in Irish comedy since his days with D’Unbelievables up to his last one-man sell-out show Pat Shortt Live. Since then he has gone on to star in the hugely successful Man about Dog, directed by Paddy Breanacht, and to play a part in Damien O’Donnell’s Inside I’m Dancing.

The High Kings are getting ready for the Royal

The High Kings released Memory Lane, their second album, in February of this year where it maintained its top five chart status for 10 weeks, and later achieved platinum status. The Cappa Ensemble brings its dazzling artistry to the Linenhall Arts Centre in Castlebar for a wonderful classical concert on Monday November 8 at 8pm. Named after the celebrated 17th century Italian violin-maker Gioffredo Cappa, this exciting young chamber ensemble has quickly established itself as a quartet of outstanding artistry, touring extensively in Australasia and Japan as well as throughout the UK. Winner of Music Network’s Young Musicwide competition in 2009, the quartet boasts a line-up of top performers in their own right: Michael McHale (piano); cellist Brian O’Kane; violinist Bartosz Woroch; and violist Adam Newman. An exciting night in prospect, with a programme of music by Mozart, Walton, Schumann and contemporary Irish composer Elaine Agnew. Part of a Music Network tour.

John B Keane’s classic The Field comes to the Royal

Lane Productions will bring their forthcoming production of John B Keane’s award-winning play The Field to the Royal Theatre, Castlebar in February next year. It will be directed by Joe Dowling. Brian Dennehy will perform the iconic role of ‘The Bull’ McCabe. The play comes to The Royal Theatre Castlebar in its debut on Thursday February 24 with performances until Saturday February 26 2011.
