The Blizzards were one of Ireland’s biggest rock ‘n’ roll deals, but that didn’t stop their guitarist and singer Niall Breslin deciding in January 2010 that he needed a new challenge. “We had six amazing years together,” he reflects. “The gigs, the fans, the other guys in the band… it was all brilliant, but I’ve always found myself being embraced by all genre directions. Not only as a writer and a performer, but as a producer too; I’m fascinated by every part of the music-making process.”

Documentary premiere in Castlebar
An Taoiseach Enda Kenny is to launch a new film about Ireland’s greatest naval hero, Foxford born Admiral William Brown whose exploits won independence for Argentina and much of South America. Mr Kenny will attend a special premiere of the hour long documentary at the Royal Theatre, Castlebar, on Monday August 1 from 7.30pm.

Get into the Bank Holiday spirit at Hotel Newport

Hotel Newport is getting into the festival spirit this Bank Holiday weekend as the Newport Grainne Uaile Festival gets under way on Thursday evening. With something for everyone, festival goers can see boat flotillas, vintage car parades, and dance and sport acts. There will also be children’s entertainment and activities throughout the weekend and live open air music every evening. The official launch of The Greenway also takes place on Friday July 29, by Taoiseach Enda Kelly who will be welcomed to Newport by Festival Queen Joanne O’Donnell.

Hotel Newport will be on hand serving delicious meals and refreshments throughout the weekend, and will conclude each evening with two entertainment acts. Everyone is welcome to join them in the Seven Arches Bar for some foot stomping, hand clapping craic, and then go on through to The Abbey Suite when doors open at approximately 10.30pm.

Next week, Brian Cunningham and his family step across the Atlantic Ocean for their only Irish performance of Atlantic Steps this year at the Royal Theatre on Sunday, July 31. Apart from the superb Sean Nós dancing, music stars from across the West of Ireland will be joining Brian and his family on stage at the Royal Theatre for this once-off performance.

The UK duo have chosen Club Mantra as the location for their decks and effects master-class, performing live on stage on Bank Holiday Sunday July 31. Fans will be treated to a relentless set of audio niceties jam-packed with samples, cuts, bootlegs, private mixes and frantic scratching. It is one of the most exciting live acts in dance music right now. The Kidd & Kutski Experience was devised last summer for six special festival performances.

The Guard comes to Achill

The much acclaimed Irish film The Guard starring Brendan Gleeson is being screened on Achill Island as the Cinemobile, Ireland’s travelling cinema, returns to Mayo for its summer visit to the county. Cinemobile is strongly supporting Irish cinema with a host of Irish films screenings this summer with screenings of The Guard, Jig, One Hundred Mornings, and The Runway. Jig is a highly acclaimed documentary on the Irish dancing championships held in Glasgow last year. A must see for all.

On Friday September 23 the wonderful music of the Carpenters will take to the stage in the Royal Theatre, with Kim Dickinson taking the role of Karen Carpenter. Kim Dickinson was touched by Karen Carpenter’s breathtaking voice, and by the wonderful arrangements of The Carpenter’s beautiful songs. She became and has remained, one of their greatest fans. Now Kim transports her audiences with the natural and uncanny likeness of her voice to that of Karen Carpenter.
