New gallery in Cong hosts inaugural exhibition

“The Ten Cross Painters” is the title of an inaugural exhibition of paintings in Cong Art Gallery. The exhibition which runs from Saturday June 16 until Saturday June 30, and the official opening will take place at 7.30pm on Saturday June 16 in the gallery. The Ten Cross Painters is the name of a group that meets in John Dinan’s studio in Cross once a month. “To learn and continue learning, and each fulfil a lifetime dream of becoming skilled, imaginative artists, enjoying every moment while striving to work at their full potential,” according to Dinan. Two of the artists are Mayo residents, Noelle Angley from Westport and Louise Conroy form Cong. Cong Art Gallery opens from 11am to 5pm every day during the exhibition including Sundays.

After a very successful month Eoghan Mac Giolla Bhríde, Mayo Writer In Residence 2012 concludes the last week of his residency in Mayo. Over the course of the month Eoghan has worked with a wide variety of schools and groups across the county.
During the residency in Mayo, Eoghan, who hails from Gaoth Dobhair in Donegal, worked with writers’ groups in Castlebar, Ballyglass, Westport, Ballinrobe, Ballyvary and Ballycastle. He also visited schools and devised stories with children in Ballina, Castlebar, Westport, Dooagh, Cilla tSidean, Claremorris, Ceathrú Thaidgh and Glenamoy. He explored film and direction technique in a workshop with Coláiste Mhuire in Tourmakeady. Eoghan discussed and gave great insight into the work of writers and did some creative writing with St Brendan’s College in Belmullet and with members of Mayo Youth Theatre. He also facilitated a flash-fiction workshop with local writers at Lough Lannagh Village and a creative writing project with first year students at Coláiste Pobail Acla.

The WhistleBlast Quartet – Kenneth Edge (saxophones and clarinet), Mary Curran (French horn), Andrew Synnott (piano) and Nicola Cleary (regular violinist with the National Symphony Orchestra) – will be hosting a great new music summer school for children aged seven to nine and 10 to 13 years, with or without previous musical experience or ability. The school will run from July 30 to August 3 and costs €85 per child or €75 if there are two or more. For seven to nine-year-olds it will run from 10am to 1pm, and for 10 to 13-year-olds it will run from 2pm to 5pm.
