Build up to Ballina Salmon Festival continues

The 2012 instalment of the Ballina Salmon Festival promises a week of fantastic entertainment for young and old alike, whether you are in the locality or are planning a break by the famed River Moy. The fun and frolics get off to a fit and healthy start on Saturday, July 7, with the Powerade Triathlon Salmon Run sponsored by Ballina Beverages.

For those who love the thrill of heights and death defying drops you will find McFadden’s Funfair in its new location in Kilcullen’s yard beside Tesco for the duration of the festival from Saturday July 7 onwards. On Sunday, July 8 it is the bikers day with the Honda Step Thru and The Custom and Classic Bike Show, which made a successful debut at last year’s festival. Later that night at 8pm, the 21st Lady of the Moy will be crowned in The Downhill Hotel. On Monday, July 9 it is Ballina’s Got Talent in Hotel Ballina, with a €1,000 prize fund sponsored by Brennan’s Lane, Ballina. On Pearse Street on Tuesday July 10 from 8pm till late the Ballina Salmon Festival Rag, sponsored by Bartra Bar and Restaurant, promises to bring the streets alive with a parade jam packed with outrageous costumes, floats, and much more. Music on the night will be supplied by the popular band Stumblin Bloc.

On Wednesday, July 11 Ballina Heritage Day which will bring you back in time with an array of food, music, and crafts. Being the festival’s biggest and most successful event there is something for everybody and it is one of the longest running heritage days in the country. There are many other events all week long, not to mention those organised by the children’s committee. Science day, circus workshops and the infamous Teddy Bears Picnic are only a taster of the many children’s events which will run all week long.
