Fri, Feb 15, 2013
Erris Players presents Moll by John B Keane, in Áras Inis Gluaire, Belmullet Arts Centre, on Friday 22 and Saturday 23 February at 8pm. This comedy is a hilarious look at a rural Irish parochial house, giving an insight into who is truly running local affairs in a fictional parish. The comedy brings the audience behind the doors of the presbytery, circa 1971, when to most Catholics that area was sacred and primarily the domain of the priest's housekeeper. The comedy opens in Canon Pratt's parlour, when he and his two curates, Fr Brest and Fr Loran, are faced with the problem of replacing their housekeeper. As the comedy develops, many changes come to the parish and the parochial house. Directed by Mary Heston and Mary Markwick. Admission is €10.

It is unusual to have a festival atmosphere on a Monday night in a west of Ireland town in early February, but that was the case in Castlebar last week, when several large band trucks arrived into town that day and set up outside the Royal Theatre. The job of unloading stage equipment and instruments started early and by 5pm all was in place for a magical Night With The Stars, hosted by Midwest Radio. And shine brightly the stars did, to a capacity crowd, who cherished each performance – including some surprise guests.

The next screening at Linenhall Film Club is the heartfelt French film The Snows of Kilimanjaro. Inspired by a Victor Hugo poem, director Robert Guédiguian introduces us to the world of Michel and Marie-Claire, a couple who have lived happily together for 30 years. Upstanding middle-aged factory worker and socialist shop steward Michel has just been forced into early retirement, but soon after they are attacked in their home, beaten, tied up and robbed of everything including their wedding rings. However it transpires that one of their attackers is a co-worker also made redundant, a young man who is attempting to support himself and his young dependents. An eloquent and quietly gripping film about the politics of everyday life.
