Network Mayo announce business awards nominees

Network Mayo have announced the nominees in the Business Women of the Year Awards 2012. The awards are divided into three categories (self employed, new business and employee) and the winners will be announced on Friday June 22. The category winners will go forward to represent Network Mayo at the national Network Ireland Awards in the autumn.

MIA Growing Real Opportunities for Women (GROW)

For the past two years, MIA has worked with women throughout Mayo providing support, training, mentoring and advice to women in the process of setting up their own enterprises. Expanding utility business SSE plc aquires Mayo power plant

SSE plc has entered in to agreement with Endesa Generacion SA, to acquire Endesa Ireland Limited in an acquisition and investment package totalling €488 million. The investment includes the 104MW Tawnaghmore gas oil flexible peaking power plant in Co Mayo.

Welfare supports needed for former self-employed – Ruane

Sinn Féin councillor Thérèse Ruane has welcomed the passing of a motion at the recent Sinn Féin Ard Fheis calling on the Minister for Social Protection to introduce a category of social welfare for self-employed people who find themselves without employment or income due to the continuing economic decline.

Cllr Ruane first raised the need for this to be reviewed in June 2010 and secured the unanimous backing of Castlebar Town Council at that time for such supports. Speaking to the floor of the Sinn Féin Ard Fheis, she said that it ”beggars belief” that no progress has been made on this issue and called for supports to be introduced as a matter of urgency to alleviate the plight of the former self-employed.

Corporate Social Responsibility – A Guide, with Irish Experiences profiles eight Irish firms including KPS Colourprint from Knock, and Blackfield Coffeeshop and Surf School from Achill Island. Both are described by the author, Dr Sheila Killian of University of Limerick, as examples of good practice in different aspects of CSR.
