Taoiseach Enda Kenny has welcomed the recent announcement by Scottish and Southern Energy (SSE ) that it is committed to new and existing energy projects in Mayo.
The announcement forms part of a near half billion euro investment by the energy provider across the country in the wake of its acquisition of the Irish assets of Spanish utility group, Endesa. A combined total of 700 temporary and permanent jobs are to be created across the country.
The company is now in the early development stage of over 150MW of renewable generation mainly in north west Mayo which will involve an investment of over €200m and the creation of 250 temporary construction jobs. Their recent purchase of the Tawnaghmore power station will also allow SSE to continue to operate this plant in the long term by supporting their ambitions to further invest in renewables in Co Mayo. This is just one of several power plants across the country recently acquired by SSE.
Having first opened its Castlebar office in 2008 with two people, SSE currently employ 10 people in the operation working on north west wind farms and on new renewable development opportunities.
The Taoiseach said, “I strongly welcome the growing interest and investment in Mayo's renewable energy resources by companies such as SSE. It secures energy jobs in Mayo and is another vote of confidence in our county's future as a hub for renewable energy.”
