Mayo hoteliers condemn ESB wage increases

Mayo hoteliers have condemned as outrageous the decision by the board of the ESB to pay the 3.5 per cent wage increase under Towards 2016 (the first phase of the transition agreement). The Mayo branch of the Irish Hotels Federation has questioned whether the board of the ESB has fully grasped the perilous condition of the Irish economy and calls on the Commission on Energy Regulation (CER) to intervene immediately and instruct the board to reverse its decision and to disallow wage increases in the calculation energy tariffs. It states that any increases would further erode Irish industry’s competitiveness, particularly when the focus should now be on seeking whatever means possible to reduce electricity costs.

Heart charity appoints nurse for Mayo

Heart charity Croí, the west of Ireland’s cardiology foundation, in collaboration with HSE West’s Mayo Primary, Community, and Continuing Care, has announced the appointment of Ballina nurse Ailish Houlihan to lead an innovative, community based, cardiovascular disease prevention programme for County Mayo. The programme, which will be known as Heart Smart Mayo, will integrate with the primary care teams in Mayo, identifying and targeting those most at risk of developing cardiovascular disease.

Need for proper procedures highlighted after payout for men who admitted fraud

EMPLOYEES across the country have been put on alert about the need for proper procedures when dealing with dismissals and disciplinary matters, following a massive payout to three workers in Waterford who had admitted they had defrauded a company.

The case at the Employment Appeals Tribunals highlighted the need for all companies to ensure that proper procedures are put in place when dealing with internal disciplinary issues, as even an admission of guilt does not necessarily justify an improper dismissal.
