CIPD to hold employment law seminar for the region

The CIPD Western Region in conjunction with Purdy Legal Solicitors has developed a residential weekend which will be held on Friday January 16 and Saturday January 17 in Hotel Westport aimed at providing business professionals, HR practitioners, supervisors, and managers with a thorough grounding in the main elements of employment law in Ireland.

The workshops — one on Friday evening and two workshops on Saturday — will cover such issues as discrimination, equality and diversity, and legislation entitlements, and will also focus on an area of concern for many HR personnel at the moment — dealing with the practical termination of an employee’s employment.

Over the course of the weekend employment law specialist Alastair Purdy will guide delegates through the process of fair dismissals from start to finish emphasising fair procedures and rulings set out by the Employment Appeals Tribunal, proper workplace investigations, preparing for a tribunal hearing, etc. Mr Purdy will host a mock EAT hearing on Saturday afternoon, giving delegates a full insight into what is to be expected if a company is faced with such an event.

Alastair Purdy has an exceptional background dealing with both the public and private sector. He has advised the Government on pay issues and represented the International Labour Organisation overseas. He has also been appointed, on foot of a direction by the High Court, to become the independent investigator in a significant issue concerning one of Ireland’s leading financial institutions.

Purdy feels that “few areas of business have become as complex as human resource management and employee legislation — the professional management of these key areas is of central importance to the development of a business”.

Many situations facing an organisation may require advice from a qualified practitioner, and Purdy Legal Solicitors has unsurpassed experience in all aspects of employment law. The company continuously monitors all emerging case law and legislation developments both in Ireland and Europe — equipping it to advise and represent clients on complex employment legislation issues.

The full cost of the CIPD residential weekend in Hotel Westport is €450, which includes three workshops, accommodation for two nights, meals, and entrance to the gala dinner dance on Friday night.

Those not requiring accommodation and who wish to attend the workshops only on Friday evening and Saturday can avail of a reduced rate.
