Upskilling is vital says GMIT lifelong learning co-ordinator

Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT ) has appointed Dr Deirdre Garvey to the new full-time position of lifelong learning co-ordinator at GMIT Castlebar. Fresh in her role Dr Garvey has advised that upskilling is vital to meet the challenges of ever-evolving technologies and changes in the workplace.

Dr Garvey previously worked with the Irish Management Institute (IMI ) as a senior specialist in strategic management and as programme director of the diploma in business strategy and the BA degree in management. She taught on executive and MBA programmes at the IMI and was associate lecturer with the Open University, Dublin Institute of Technology, and Athlone Institute of Technology.

She holds a PhD, an MBS and a BA in management. In industry, she has extensive experience at senior management level. Locally, she has worked on business mentoring assignments with Mayo Enterprise Board and provided management consultancy to various enterprises.

“I am delighted to work with GMIT in the area of lifelong learning. Despite the challenging economic environment, I believe investment in education is more critical now than ever before. People’s skills must be constantly updated to help them to meet the challenges of ever-evolving technologies and changes in the workplace. Lifelong learning is key to jobs and growth, as well as combating social exclusion,” she said.

“GMIT Castlebar has a number of new programmes starting this January such as Cisco CCNA Network Associate Certification which is specifically designed to help people achieve certification while managing the demands of work. We are also offering in Castlebar for the first time the NISO certificate in occupational safety and health. And we continue to run a number of accredited modules part-time in business, technology construction, and social studies.”

GMIT will hold an information and course enrolment evening and invites the public to go along and talk to them about their programmes on Monday January 19 from 6pm to 8pm. The Lifelong Learning Centre at GMIT Castlebar offers a range of part-time programmes from Higher Certificate to ordinary and honour degrees in the areas of business, humanities, construction, and computing including the BA degree in personnel management, BA in art and design, and the recently launched BA in applied social studies. It also offers a number of single subject modules and general courses in photography, heritage, languages, and computing to allow people learn at their own manageable pace.
