Killala firm wins contract to install electric car home charge points

Gaeltec Utilities Ltd, a Mayo company that specialises in design, installation, and commissioning in the energy, renewable and telecommunications sectors, has been successful in winning a contract from ESB ecars to install home charge points for electric cars nationwide. The company has also integrated the first electric vehicle into its own commercial fleet of some 80 vehicles. Gaeltec Utilities is headed by Killala native, Sean Hannick.

Fianna Fáil leader opposes attack on Údarás na Gaeltachta

Representatives of the board of Údarás na Gaeltachta have met the Fianna Fáil leader Mícheál Martin and Fianna Fáil TDs Éamon Ó Cuív and Mícheál Kitt at Leinster House to discuss the Government’s decision to remove the democratic elections to the board of Údarás na Gaeltachta.

The meeting was attended by Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill, Councillor Seán Ó Tuairisg, and Val Hanley, who represented the other Fianna Fáil board members of Údarás na Gaeltachta. They voiced their serious concerns about the future of Údarás following the Government’s decision last week to remove the power from the people to elect those who run the agency.

Mayo TDs appointed to Oireachtas committees

A number of Mayo TDs have been appointed to Oireachtas committees.

Fine Gael Deputy John O’Mahony has been appointed to the committee on Communications, Natural Resources and Agriculture. Fine Gael Dep Michelle Mulherin and Fianna Fáil Dep Dara Calleary have both been appointed to the committee on Investigations, Oversight and Petitions, while Dep Calleary will also sit on the Justice, Defence and Equality committee.

Mayo companies recognised as Business Ambassadors

Mayo companies Pamex Ltd and PEL recycling have been recognised as InterTradeIreland Business Ambassadors for Mayo at a special event held with Minister Richard Bruton, Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation in Dublin. More than 80 TDs and senators were also in attendance at the event which recognised SMEs that have excelled through North-South trade and innovation.

Restoration of minimum wage welcomed by Labour councillor

Labour councillor Harry Barrett has welcomed the restoration of the minimum wage from €7.65 to €8.65.

“The cut of €1 an hour by the previous Fianna Fáil led government in 2010 had devastating effects on the low-paid and the Labour Party was committed to reversing the cut,” Cllr Barrett said. “I therefore congratulate Minister for Social Protection, Joan Burton, for making the restoration a priority under the Social Welfare and Pensions Bill.

Mayo boasts one of the fastest growing franchises in Snap Group

The Snap Group has been operating in Ireland since 1984 and the Mayo centre located in the N5 Business Park in Castlebar has been open since 2006. Owned and run by local woman Sarah Flood and Colin Teahon, the Mayo business became one of the fastest growing franchises within the Snap group.

Maigh Eo Media was the only west of Ireland communications company to be recognised at the prestigious awards ceremony, which is accredited by the Marketing Institute of Ireland.

Údarás na Gaeltachta to retain its enterprise functions

Údarás na Gaeltachta has welcomed the decision by Government that it is to maintain its current functions, particularly its employment creation brief.

An tÚdarás also has welcomed the decision to develop a new mechanism which will formalise existing co-operations between an tÚdarás and other enterprise development agencies for the purposes of attracting investment and creating employment in the Gaeltacht. An tÚdarás hopes to have a central role in the development of this mechanism in conjunction with the other agencies involved to ensure the best possible benefits for the Gaeltacht community.

Farmers protest against multiples’ domination of food chain
