The Fahey Sales Showjumping League is poised for a most dramatic final next weekend in Claregalway.

Ballinasloe’s Damian Griffin has kept the title battle alive after an almighty effort in Turlough on Sunday. He finished second behind Knockmore’s Alex Duffy who showed tremendous poise and confidence on Courtown to take his second Grand Prix victory of the season.

The Irish women’s junior 8 rowing team which won gold in Cardiff at the Home Countries International Regatta, beating England, Scotland, and Wales. Galway boasted seven rowers on the team. Galway girls claim medals for Ireland in European Rowing Championships

There was great success for the Tribesmen Rowing Club in the European Rowing Championships held at Inniscarra Lake in Cork over the weekend.

The Coxed Eight rowed on Friday and were the Bronze Medal Winners in a tense, nail biting finish. The finish was so close, in fact, that Italy were celebrating victory of the bronze medal until a photo finish confirmed it was Ireland that were ahead. France and The Netherlands won the Gold and Silver medals respectively in this competition. The Coxed Eight team was made up of Kate Rushe, Lisa Dilleen, Aisling Harris, Katie Barrett, Aifric Keogh, Holly Nixon, Orla McEvoy, Sarah, and Rachel Egan.

Showjumping season prepares for thrilling finale

The Fahey Sales Grand Prix league is set for a thrilling finale in the coming weeks with three of the region’s leading riders battling it out for top honours. Darragh Kenny from Offaly won Saturday’s Loughrea Grand Prix but it was the performance of Ballinasloe’s Damian Griffin that proved crucial as his second place finish moved him within five points of overall leader and reigning champion Carl Hanley.

Claremorris native Hanley leads on 38 points ahead of next weekend’s penultimate event in Turlough Castlebar while Griffin has 33 and Crossmolina’s Matt Gordon is on 27. The league will finish in two weeks time in Claregalway with points and a half on offer for the top 10 riders.

For many people the Galway Races are the event to go to and they are looking forward to it all year long. To some the main attraction of the event is the old friends and new people you get to meet, to others it’s the atmosphere of excitement and glamour, and to others still it’s the very passion for watching horses race and perhaps engage in a little betting. Although the first Ballybrit race meeting, lasting two days, took place in 1869, a lot has changed since.
