Olympic Boxing Club Galway is hosting a Ukranian national underage team for a week, culminating in a special Galway versus Ukraine tournament.
The visitors will be guests of the Olympic club from Friday September 30 to October 2 after a coach of the Ukrainian national team contacted Olympic head coach Michael Mongan with a view to bringing a team of young boxers to the city.

Through a child's eyes from the back-seat, looking between two adult heads, one belonging to my late uncle, John, the other belonging to one of his neighbours, over the dash and the car bonnet, it emerged like an ocean going liner on the horizon. The stand at Ballybrit, this was the setting for the cruise on which I would happily embark for the coming week.

The seven-day meeting gets underway at Ballybrit next Monday and despite watching the action out of the saddle this time around, Power, who retired after this year’s Punchestown Festival, is once again looking forward to the meeting which of course features the Galway Hurdle and Galway Plate.

Considering Galway led from pillar to post against the pre-match favourites, it seems a tad harsh to say that the Tribesmen were fortunate to progress, but they did profit from a large slice of luck in the opening minute when man of the match Jack Grealish’s effort slipped through the hands of Cork ‘keeper Patrick Collins to the back of the net.
