United given green light to launch

Galway United, having succeeded in its appeal to retain premiership soccer status, will now hold its pre-season launch on Saturday at Elverys Sports, Headford Road, Galway (12.30pm).
Manager Sean Connor and his new-look squad will be unveiled ahead of United's friendly against Sligo Rovers at the Showgrounds on Saturday (6pm), while the premier league action is to open at Terryland Park on March 4 when United hosts St Patrick’s Athletic.

It has not been an easy start for Finian Hanley and Galway in the National League this year. Greenfields Hockey Club easily accounted for Yeats County by 5-0 to win the Connacht Senior League and the Comer Cup for the third year in a row. The Galway champions will now represent the province in the Irish Hockey League wildcard play-offs in Dublin in May when they will compete against opposition from Leinster, Munster, and Ulster.

Cycling’s first road race of the new season will be held on Sunday, hosted by the West Coast Wheelers Open Race in Galway. The event will start at 12 noon from The Temperance Hall in Loughrea and feature a 90km circuit for A1 and A2 riders, sponsored by Nigel's Cycles (Galway). A3/A4 riders will race 60km, sponsored by Tri Bikes (Loughrea), while the event will also feature a KOH competition for both events, sponsored by West Side Cycles (Galway). A club’s season can turn on a small thing. Clarinbridge were close to crashing out of the Galway county championship in the group stages last summer. It took a late free from Mark Kerins to snatch a draw off Beagh in their last group game, and without that score, they would not have even qualified, having lost their first two games to Kinvara and Portumna.
